WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Make Sharing Contacts More Private
WhatsApp is finally introducing usernames, giving users a new way to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature has been requested for years and is expected to make conversations with new contacts more private while keeping phone numbers hidden.
How WhatsApp Usernames Work
To use the feature, you’ll first need a regular WhatsApp account linked to your phone number.
Once usernames become available in your region, you can reserve one by going to Settings > Account > Username.
Usernames can be between 3 and 35 characters long, provided they follow WhatsApp’s guidelines.
Instead of giving someone your mobile number, you can simply share your username.
Only people who know your exact username will be able to start a conversation with you.
WhatsApp also lets you change or remove your username whenever you want, giving you more control over your privacy.
Username Reservation and Privacy Features
To prevent duplicate usernames across its billions of users, WhatsApp is rolling out a reservation system.
The company is also reserving certain usernames for well-known public figures, brands, and organizations.
Businesses and creators may be able to use the same username they already have on Facebook or Instagram for a consistent online identity.
For users who want even more privacy, WhatsApp is introducing an optional username key.
This adds another layer of protection by requiring people to know both your username and the username key before they can contact you.
Availability and What to Expect
At launch, usernames won’t be searchable within WhatsApp.
You’ll need to share your username directly with others through a message or in person.
QR code support for username sharing is not available yet.
Final Thoughts
WhatsApp’s new username feature gives users a safer and more private way to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
While the rollout will happen gradually, it marks an important step toward improving privacy on one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms.
