Spotify AI Persona labels for AI-generated artist profiles

Spotify Will Label AI Persona Profiles and Limit Their Recommendations

Spotify is introducing a new way to help listeners identify artists who are presented as AI-generated identities.

Starting next month, the music streaming platform will add an “AI Persona” label to selected artist profiles and limit how their music appears in recommendations.

The move comes as AI-generated music and virtual artists become more common across streaming platforms.

Spotify says the new system is designed to give listeners more information without treating every song made with AI tools as artificial music.

What the AI Persona Label Means

From September 2026, Spotify will display an AI Persona badge on profiles that appear to represent AI-generated people or groups.

The label can appear in several places, including an artist’s profile, search results, the About section and track listings inside playlists.

Artists can voluntarily identify themselves as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists.

However, Spotify will also review profiles itself. The company plans to focus first on profiles that have already reached certain audience levels.

This means the label will not depend entirely on artists reporting themselves.

AI Personas Won’t Get Normal Recommendations

Spotify is also changing how these profiles are discovered.

By default, music from AI Personas will not be included in Spotify’s editorial or algorithm-based recommendations.

Their songs will also stay out of personalized recommendations unless a listener has specifically followed the artist.

Following an AI Persona therefore becomes an important signal. If you choose to follow one, Spotify can continue recommending its music to you.

The policy is aimed at giving listeners more control over whether they want to discover AI-generated identities.

The Label Is About the Artist, Not the Music

Spotify is making an important distinction between an AI-generated artist identity and music created using AI tools.

An artist can use AI during the creative process without automatically receiving an AI Persona label.

The new badge is mainly about whether the public identity of the artist appears to be an AI-generated person or group.

Information about AI involvement in individual songs will continue to be handled through features such as AI Credits and SongDNA.

Spotify is also planning a reporting tool that will allow users to flag artist profiles they believe should carry an AI Persona label.

Spotify’s Growing AI Challenge

Spotify is expanding its use of AI while also trying to prevent low-quality AI-generated content from overwhelming its platform.

The company already offers AI-powered features for music discovery and personalization.

At the same time, it has introduced rules around AI-generated music, including restrictions on unauthorized voice clones.

The new AI Persona system could help Spotify maintain a clearer line between human artists, virtual identities and music created with AI assistance.

Conclusion

Spotify’s AI Persona labels give listeners a clearer way to understand who is behind the music they discover.

By limiting automatic recommendations for these profiles, Spotify is also giving users more control over what enters their personalized feeds.

As AI becomes a bigger part of music creation, clear labeling could become increasingly important.

Spotify’s challenge will be finding the right balance between supporting new technology and protecting the experience of listeners and human artists.
