Airbnb testing AI-powered search for personalized travel results

Airbnb Uses AI to Build Features Faster and Tests AI-Powered Search

Airbnb is increasingly using artificial intelligence behind the scenes to develop new features faster.

While the company has been cautious about adding AI directly to its customer experience, its internal use of the technology is already changing how products are built.

According to Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, AI has helped the company reduce the time needed to take a feature from an early idea to launch by as much as 60%.

AI Is Speeding Up Airbnb’s Development

Airbnb has been using AI across several areas of product development, including search, registration, checkout, payments, and tools for hosts.

The company previously said that AI now writes a large portion of its new code.

This has allowed its teams to build, test, and improve features more quickly.

Airbnb also reported that it shipped nearly 80% more features and improvements this year compared with the same period last year.

The goal is not simply to use AI everywhere. Instead, Airbnb is using it to help teams move faster while focusing on features that can improve the travel experience.

Airbnb Begins Testing AI Search

One of the biggest consumer-facing changes is an upcoming test of AI-powered search.

Instead of relying only on traditional filters and keywords, users will be able to describe what they want in everyday language.

For example, a traveler could explain the type of trip they are planning and let AI help find suitable stays.

The results could appear in a more visual format, with AI-generated titles and personalized highlights.

Airbnb does not want to force customers to change how they search.

The company plans to provide a toggle so users can choose between the existing search experience and the new AI option.

AI Is Already Helping Customer Support

Airbnb has been using AI more extensively in customer service.

Its AI support system has expanded to more than 50 languages, with plans to support voice interactions.

The company says nearly 45% of customer issues that begin with its AI agent are resolved without human assistance.

This has also helped reduce customer support costs. Airbnb reported that its support cost per booking has fallen by 16% year over year.

Airbnb’s Strong Results

The increased use of AI comes as Airbnb continues to report strong financial results.

Revenue reached $3.6 billion for the quarter, representing a 17% increase from the previous year.

The company’s results suggest that AI is becoming more than an experiment.

It is increasingly being used as a practical tool to improve development, customer support, and potentially the way travelers discover properties.

Conclusion

Airbnb’s AI strategy shows that artificial intelligence does not always need to be visible to customers to have an impact.

By using AI to speed up development and customer support, the company is already seeing practical benefits.

Its upcoming AI search test could be the next major step, giving travelers a more natural way to find stays while allowing users to keep the traditional search experience if they prefer it.
