Telegram’s Shortlink Domain Is Back Online After Temporary Suspension

Telegram users experienced an unexpected disruption after the platform’s t.me shortlink domain briefly went offline, preventing access to public groups and shared invitation links.

Although the issue lasted only about a day, it affected millions of users who rely on these links to join Telegram communities.

Why Did the t.me Domain Stop Working?

The outage occurred because the t.me domain was temporarily placed on a server hold by its domain registrar.

When a domain receives this status, it becomes inaccessible until the restriction is removed.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov confirmed that the shortlink service had stopped working, while users around the world reported that shared group links were unavailable.

Service Has Now Been Restored

The company responsible for managing the .me domain later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and the t.me domain was restored.

According to the registrar, the temporary suspension was related to compliance with U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations.

Once the required compliance checks were completed, the restriction was lifted and the domain returned to normal operation.

What Caused the Suspension?

The timing of the outage coincided with new U.S. sanctions targeting a VPN service that reportedly had a Telegram group linked through a t.me address.

Industry observers believe the registrar may have temporarily suspended the entire t.me domain while processing the compliance requirements, rather than blocking only the specific sanctioned link.

However, Telegram has not officially confirmed this explanation.

Did Telegram Stop Working Completely?

No. The issue only affected the t.me shortlink domain used for public invitations and sharing links.

Existing chats, private conversations, and other Telegram services continued to function normally.

Users could still access Telegram through the app, and another Telegram domain remained available during the disruption.

Conclusion

The temporary suspension of Telegram’s t.me domain highlights how regulatory compliance can sometimes affect widely used online services.

Fortunately, the issue was resolved quickly, and users can once again use t.me links to join public channels and groups without interruption.
